When I booked a year-end party slot last January, I wasn’t really planning on any theme. But I endeavored to organize a #ZeroWasteChallenge Year-End Class Party in line with March 15 #FridaysForFuture in McDonalds. I figured a tactile, small-group activity would be engaging and fun for the kids, but how do I make it all eco-friendly, especially in a fast-food restaurant?!
I had to come up with an activity that would be a good alternative to refusing the usual party theme of balloons, party hats, invitations, and plastic prizes. My kids concurred that slime-making would be fun, especially fluffy slime! So I went to research how it’s done and had the help of co-parents Ave & Joan to fine-tune and dry-run the recipe. It was an Awe-Slime success! And so, I sent out the invitations (printed on recycled school memos) to outline the challenge. It included bringing the personalized eco-bag giveaways from our class Christmas party.
For the slime-making activity, I prepared empty cookie containers for mixing bowls in addition to beautiful stainless steel ones borrowed from Nikki. We also cleaned several empty yoghurt cups for take-home slime containers, just in case it was needed. Nikki also lent some stainless utensils in addition to beautiful wooden cutlery sponsored by Kathy, so we can refuse the plastic ones. The kids brought refillable bottles too. Although some had to use the restaurant’s paper cups, we refused all the straws. The management of McDonalds was accommodating and supportive of our requests.
Our party giveaways were eco-warrior starter kits of metal straws and bamboo toothbrushes sponsored by Jeosen. I was hoping to find a supplier who can deliver personalized custom-sized cutlery pouches, unfortunately my timing was too tight.
Nevertheless, it was a super fun afternoon conquering the #ZeroWasteChallenge! Thanks to my supportive co-parents!
